2011 Mountain Bike Shuttle Updates

Wasatch Crest Shuttle is proud to announce our eighth season providing mountain bike shuttle service from 3900 South Wasatch Boulevard to Guardsman Pass atop Big Cottonwood Canyon. The details of this year’s mountain bike shuttles includes no fare increases with more season pass options, increased capacity per shuttle with two vans on weekends and holidays, adjustments to scheduled shuttles, and unscheduled shuttle alerts through Twitter (www.twitter.com/mtbshuttle). All of these changes have been made to increase the accessibility to the Wasatch Crest Trail and upper Park City trails by way of Guardsman Pass.

The first change for 2011 is adding another van on weekends and holidays to accommodate up to 10 riders with gear for each shuttle time. The past two seasons we have used a van and Suburban. Since the Suburban was limited to six riders, many people were turned away for those times. That problem has been resolved and more people will have the option of leaving their cars out of Big Cottonwood Canyon to ride the Wasatch Crest TrailIn spite of increased fuel costs that have risen over 50% from 2010, Wasatch Crest Shuttle is not raising the fare for our 2011 mountain bike shuttles. Individual shuttles are $15 per person for scheduled shuttles, no minimum; two rider minimum for unscheduled shuttles. Individual season passes will be the same price as last year too, $75, and are available now. Adding to the individual season pass, we are now offering a Gold Pass for $150 that is transferable in addition to other benefits.

This year’s scheduled mountain bike shuttles will be as follows:

Weekdays – 7 am and 5:30 pm.

Weekends and holidays – 7 am, 7:45, 8:30, 9:15, 10:00, 10:45, 11:30, & 12:15 pm.

The weekday evening shuttle has been moved back 30 minutes in order for people to catch the shuttle after work without rushing. Unscheduled shuttles during the week still require a two rider minimum. The weekend and holiday schedule was reduced by three shuttles due to a lack of demand for those times over the past eight years. Weekend and holiday shuttles after 12:15 pm on weekends and holidays require a reservation and two rider minimum.

Wondering how to find out if someone has made an unscheduled shuttle reservation? Follow Wasatch Crest Shuttle on Twitter (www.twitter.com/mtbshuttle) to receive unscheduled shuttle alerts. When someone makes a reservation for an unscheduled time, an alert will be sent out, or tweet, indicating the day, time, and number of seats available. Text follow mtbshuttle to 40404 to receive these alerts on your phone as a text message. Soon, you will be able to reply to the alert, or tweet, to reserve your seat(s) on the shuttle that has just been reserved (a Twitter account is required – register at http://twitter.com/; other restrictions apply).

Due to the success of the season pass program last year, Wasatch Crest Shuttle is offering the 2011 Individual Season Pass once again and introducing our new Gold Pass.

Just like last year, the 2011 Individual Season Pass is good for unlimited scheduled mountain bike shuttles from 3900 South Wasatch Boulevard to Guardsman Pass for the low price of $75. Unscheduled shuttles require a two rider minimum before pass validates. That means, if someone makes a reservation for an unscheduled time and meets the minimum rider requirement, then your pass is valid and you won’t be charged. Or, the pass holder makes a reservation for three riders, one pass holder and two paying riders, then the pass validates and the pass holder is not charged. New for 2011, we are introducing the Gold Pass for $150. Like the individual pass, the Gold Pass is good for unlimited scheduled shuttles from 3900 South Wasatch Boulevard to Guardsman Pass. 5 Days Of Scheduled Mountain Bike Shuttles Remaining

There are only 5 days of scheduled mountain bike shuttles left in the 2010 season. After October 2 all mountain bike shuttles will be require a reservation and two rider minimum. Season passes will also expire on Saturday the second. Storms on Wednesday canceled a lot of riding plans so don’t lose another day. Get out tomorrow to start the weekend off with an epic Wasatch Crest ride.

If you missed out yesterday, reserve your Friday mountain bike shuttle. The 7 am is open with 8 seats vacant. An unscheduled shuttle for 9 am has sold out, but the rest of Friday is free and Sunday is filling up fast.

The combined fall foliage (pix), sunny skies, and temperatures in the 60’s and low 70’s at 9000 ft. this weekend, it’s easy to understand why Sunday’s schedule is so full already. ***MAKING THE CASE FOR THE MOUNTAIN BIKE SHUTTLE***

Since July 2^nd, Wasatch Crest Shuttle’s mountain bike shuttle has served over 500 passengers riding the Wasatch Crest Trail. The trail is a 22+ mile ride/hike from Guardsman Pass at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon back down through Mill Creek Canyon. The actual route is a combination of Wasatch Crest Trail, Great Western Trail, and Big Water Trails. For one to complete this route, a two car shuttle was required before Wasatch Crest Shuttle’s mountain bike shuttle from 3900 South Wasatch Boulevard to Guardsman Pass.

Rather than taking additional time to retrieve the car at Guardsman Pass, these 500 plus riders went on to do something else after their ride: work, hang out with friends and family, or relive tall tales of embellished glory over a tall frosty one. In addition to the convenience and time savings that the mountain bike shuttle offers people that ride the Wasatch Crest Trail, the shuttle reduces both traffic and demand for parking in Big Cottonwood Canyon. Creating easier access to one of the country’s greatest trails and other benefits make the mountain bike shuttle an obvious choice when your free time is priceless and limited.

There are too many things to do in the Salt Lake area during the summer to limit yourself with needless car retrievals after your ride. It simply takes too much time and your free time means too much to waste. Let’s break it down: a two car shuttle will spend a combined 3 hours and 90.4 miles in the cars to do a 22 mile, 21/2 hour mountain bike ride. This is only the time that it takes to drive round trip from 3900 South Wasatch Boulevard to Guardsman Pass and not the time required to drive to and from your home. If you live 15 minutes away from Mill Creek Canyon, then you will have to schedule 6 hours to do the ride with a self shuttle! Wasatch Crest Shuttle’s mountain bike shuttle will save you at least an hour and a half. What else will you do after the ride?

The mountain bike shuttle has reduced traffic in Big Cottonwood Canyon by keeping at least 444 cars out of the canyon. This number is based on the assumption that only two cars are used for the ride. With car size and bike rack limitations, many groups require more than two vehicles. Reducing the number of cars in the canyon helps ease traffic congestion, improves air quality in the water shed, and reduces parking demands in the National Forrest.

Wasatch Crest Shuttle’s mountain bike shuttle reduces an increasing demand for parking at trail heads. On Sunday August 22, the parking lot at the top of Guardsman Pass was completely full before 7 am. The combination of self shuttling riders, hikers, hunters, campers, and sight seer’s has made a very congested SR 190 over Guardsman Pass. This congestion is contributed by vehicles from Salt Lake and Park City. Four years ago, Wasatch Crest Shuttle conducted a study to count the number of cars at any one time parked at the old Wasatch Crest Trail trail head along SR 190. As many as 50 cars have been counted at one time along the shoulder of a hairpin turn with limited sight. In this area there might be 36 inches of paved shoulder and 12 inches of soft shoulder before the hillside. Most cars are parked precipitously close to the downhill side causing unneeded erosion. That’s only one trail head! If you drive up Big Cottonwood Canyon on any weekend during the summer you’ll find that the Mill D, Lake Blanche, Guardsman Pass, and resort parking areas (if open to the public) are full. Fewer cars equal fewer developed parking areas and that is what Wasatch Crest Shuttle’s mountain bike shuttle does.

Wasatch Crest Shuttle is a transportation company with the goals of enhancing recreational experiences in the Northern Wasatch Mountains and reducing the negative effects caused by users and tourists. This weekend marks Wasatch Crest Shuttle’s seventh year providing scheduled mountain bike shuttles from Mill Creek Canyon to the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon, or Guardsman Pass. Mountain bike shuttles are $15 per person and are available on even numbered days coinciding with the trail rules of upper Mill Creek Canyon - no bikes on odd numbered days. On weekends and holidays that are even numbered there are 11 shuttles from 7 am till 2:30 pm, every 45 minutes. Weekdays have two shuttles: 7 am and 5 pm. Reservations are not required, but recommended, for scheduled shuttles. Unscheduled shuttles are available by reservation only with a minimum charge.

Wasatch Crest Shuttle is equipped to shuttle six to ten riders at a time. The bikes are loaded onto trailers with Yakima High Roller bike racks. This set up allows for a maximum load without your bike getting knocked around in transit.

UTA Rideshare endorsed Wasatch Crest Shuttle for “…develop[ing] transportation alternatives that enhance air quality, conserve energy, and improve mobility along the Wasatch Front. UTA Rideshare appreciates Wasatch Crest Shuttle for providing outdoor enthusiasts a chance to leave their car at home.” According to the National Forest Service, Wasatch-Cache National Forest, visitors to the Tri-Canyon area will make increasing use of mass transit to reduce the congestion on the highways, and mass transit opportunities will expand to include year-round operations (Revised Forest Plan Wasatch-Cache National Forest, February 2003, 4-162). Next, Solitude Ski Area’s Master Development Plan states that traffic counts from 1990 to 1995 in Big Cottonwood Canyon show that during weekends, holidays, and the peak of fall foliage, the number of vehicles traveling SR 190 is similar to that of peak winter uses (1.9.1.3). Leaving your car behind to enjoy the Wasatch is an option that is clearly long overdue.

Wasatch Crest Shuttle was founded in 2004 by Andrew Duggins. While on a trip to Brian Head, Andrew saw Gorge’s Bike Shop’s mountain bike shuttle and recognized a similar opportunity in the Cottonwood Canyons. In addition to making the Wasatch Crest Trail more accessible and convenient, the mountain bike shuttle reduces the number of cars in the canyon in the summer and lessens the demand for parking at trailheads.

Often riding by himself, Andrew and many others have been forced to either alter their riding plans or scrap the ride altogether because of the logistics required to ride the Wasatch Crest Trail. The trail is a 22+ mile ride/hike from Guardsman Pass at the top of Big Cottonwood Canyon back down through Mill Creek Canyon. The actual route is a combination of Wasatch Crest Trail, Great Western Trail, and Big Water Trails. To extend the single track experience, most people add Pipeline Trail from Elbow Fork to Rattlesnake Gulch in Mill Creek. For one to complete this route, a two car shuttle has been required. Some of the accessibility problems include requiring two riders-no singles, finding someone to shuttle you that doesn’t ride, and limited parking options at the trailhead. Wasatch Crest Shuttle has created more access and convenience to riders by offering our mountain bike shuttle on a regular schedule from July through September. With the mountain bike shuttle, now there is no need to find another rider, your wife, or friend to drive you to the top! And possibly best of all, no 90 minute car retrieval! That’s more time on the weekend or holiday to spend with family and friends, not needlessly driving two cars up and down the canyon.

Providing the mountain bike shuttle fills the gap between ski buses offered by UTA during the winter ski season and gives summer recreationists a car pooling option to enjoy the Wasatch Canyons. Currently Envision Utah is conducting a public survey to assist in revising the 1989 Salt Lake County Wasatch Canyons Master Plan for City Creek, Emigration, Red Butte, Parley’s, Mill Creek, Big Cottonwood, and Little Cottonwood Canyons. Part of this process has included surveys and public open houses to “…engage the public in setting priorities and identify long-term strategies that enhance the value of the canyons for current residents and future generations.” Preliminary survey results show that most people are concerned about extending public transportation to include year round service in addition to controlled development. According to Tyler Garcia of UTA’s planning department, new routes are determined by demographic/market data, accessibility, and population density of a certain area. New routes are not developed by demand, or petitioning, from the public. Garcia also says that summer canyon activities are considered on-demand transportation. It has been UTA’s experience that summer activities are more impulsive compared to skiing that takes planning with ridership data easily collected. Basically, there isn’t enough information for UTA to research the possibility of extending their canyon services into the summer months. And simply because people want the service doesn’t mean that they will ride the bus. Garcia said less than 30% of people that petition for new routes actually ride them. So, people want year round public transportation, but less than half would actually ride it and still use the canyon. If UTA planned routes based on return on investment, the ski bus and summer buses wouldn’t even run. After fares are collected from the ski resorts for employees and season passes, the fares collected account for less than 20% of operational costs for UTA from December through April. Without the resorts offering usable data like pass sales and routes being cancelled due to current economic conditions, it seems that UTA will be hard pressed to extend services beyond what is already offered. That’s where Wasatch Crest Shuttle fits in.

Wasatch Crest Shuttle is proud to take part in Mill Creek Township’s Venture Outdoors Festival, a celebration of all things outdoors. This year's festival will be on June 19 from 3 pm to 9 pm. Wasatch Crest Shuttle will be a part of two fun and exciting games during the Festival:
The Great Venture Game
Game participants will seek special stamps located at participating booths. Once their game card is complete, participants qualify for a drawing at the end of the festival and a chance to win a 2010 SEASON PASS!

Mill Creek Canyon to Guardsman Pass, Drop Off on the Pass and Weekday Shuttles

New for 2010, all scheduled mountain bike shuttles from Mill Creek Canyon, 3900 South Wasatch Boulevard, will go to the top of Guardsman Pass, SR 152. If you remember, the main reason for not taking riders to the top was a problem of turning radius. The van along with the 16 foot trailer made it almost impossible and unsafe to turn around on busy weekends and holidays. We have downsized the trailers using Yakima® High Roller® racks capable of holding any bicycle type. We also have capacity for tandem bicycles, call for availability.

We are very excited to offer this drop off location and expand your riding options. Now you don’t have to limit yourself to the Crest Trail. Check out mountaintrails.org map page and plan a new adventure for your next shuttled ride. All Mill Creek Canyon to Guardsman shuttles can be purchased online.

For the last six summers, Wasatch Crest Shuttle has offered scheduled mountain bike shuttles on weekends and holidays. This year we are adding more shuttle times to the weekends and holidays for a total of 11 shuttles every 45 minutes from 7 am to 2:30 pm. In addition to that, even numbered weekdays will have shuttles at 7 am and 5 pm. Just as before, reservations for scheduled shuttles are not required, but recommended. Public vs. Private shuttles. If you can’t ride during one of the scheduled shuttles, you can reserve times that work better for you. This year these unscheduled shuttle reservations can be public or private. Public shuttles are posted in the calendar on mountainbikeshuttle.com along with a mobile alert allowing others to join you. Private shuttles are not posted online and a mobile alert is not sent out. Most unscheduled shuttles require 2 minimum riders. $15/Rider and Season Passes-Both on Sale

All scheduled mountain bike shuttles from Mill Creek Canyon to Guardsman Pass will be $15 per rider. If you become a Facebook Fan and follow us on Twitter, you will be eligible for 15% off individual shuttles. By joining the conversation, will be able to receive discounted rates, specials, open seats on scheduled shuttles, and trail/canyon conditions. Follow us and get this 15% off price from now through July 4. There is no limit to the number of shuttles you can purchase as long as you’re a fan. Offer subject to terms of service.

For those that want to maximize their mountain biking possibilities, the 2010 Season Pass is available for $75-on sale for 10% off on our Hot Deals page. The season pass is good for unlimited scheduled mountain bike shuttles. Pass valid for unscheduled shuttles once minimum is met. The 2010 Season Pass will take away the worry of a shuttle for a big ride allowing you to ride, ride, ride….

Once again, Wasatch Crest Shuttle is proud to announce that we will be participating in Mill Creek Township’s Venture Outdoors Festival. Celebrate National Get Outdoors Day by joining us at the Venture Outdoors Festival on June 19 at Canyon Rim Park (2900 E. 3100 S.). Take part in fun and challenging outdoor activities while learning about the best places to hike, camp, and play in the great outdoors. The event is free and open to everyone.
